FOR YOUTH


Age-Appropriate, Code-Compliant Programming for Preschool through College

Bird and Bee Education's Programs for Youth are always designed and implemented to be age-appropriate and are consistent with the following laws and guidelines for Comprehensive Sexual Health Education (click on titles to view the most current source documents):
  • California Healthy Youth Act (AB 329: Ed Codes 51930-51939, effective January 1, 2016)
  • California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000 (AB 537)
  • National Sexuality Education Standards (Future of Sex Education, 2nd Ed., 2020)
  • Health Education Content Standards for CA Public Schools (CA State Board of Ed., AB 689, 2008)
  • Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education, K-12 (SIECUS, 3rd ed., 2004)

Body Positive!
for Children, preschool-3rd grade

Topics can include:
  • Naming all our parts and understanding the amazing things they do
  • Loving and accepting our own bodies and all the ways that bodies can be
  • Affirming that there are many, many ways to be girls and boys
  • Celebrating all the ways there are to be a family
  • Understanding that "Private" means "Just For Me"
  • Differentiating between Okay and Not Okay types of touch and play
  • Recognizing body & facial cues that mean "STOP!  I’m uncomfortable!"
  • Learning to respect ourselves & others: setting and honoring boundaries
  • Knowing when and how to ask grownups for help

Puberty Education
for Tweens, 4th-6th grades

Topics can include:
  • Understanding the changes of puberty
  • Learning about personal hygiene practices and supplies
  • Describing sexual and reproductive structures and their functions
  • Knowing how conception and fetal development occur
  • Introducing HIV: what it is and how it can & cannot be transmitted
  • Celebrating gender and sexual diversity
  • Developing a healthy body image
  • Differentiating between playing, flirting, and sexual harassment
  • Practicing communication and boundary-setting skills
  • Encouraging respect & dignity for all bodies, identities, & experiences
  • Recognizing experiences and situations that require adult help
  • Identifying trusted adults and credible resources to turn to

Comprehensive Sexuality Education
for Teens, 7th-12th grades

Topics can include:
  • Recognizing physical, emotional, cognitive, & social changes of adolescence
  • Exploring gender identity/expression, gender roles, & sexual orientation
  • Identifying sexual and reproductive anatomy and physiology
  • Understanding STI/HIV transmission, treatment, & prevention
  • Describing conception, fetal development, safe & legal pregnancy options
  • Identifying safe & effective methods of contraception & their correct use
  • Exploring health benefits of abstinence, delaying sexual activity, & monogamy
  • Practicing decision-making, communication, & boundary-setting skills
  • Recognizing healthy vs. unhealthy & safe vs. unsafe behaviors & relationships
  • Understanding consent, sexual harassment, exploitation, abuse & assault
  • Encouraging respect & dignity for all bodies, identities, & experiences
  • Being informed about Minor Consent Laws and how to access clinic services
  • Identifying trusted adults and credible resources to turn to

Real Life, Real Choices
for Young Adults, ages 18-25

Topics can include:
  • Sex Positivity: exploring what healthy sexuality means for me
  • Safer Sex Practices: how to stay healthy while being sexually active (including STI screening/prevention, contraceptive use, and pregnancy options)
  • Gender and Sexual Identity: discovering & celebrating who we are
  • Decision-making and Communication Skills: how to identify, assert, and respect desires, limits, and needs in relationships
  • Consent: how to give it, how to get it, what the law says
  • Cultivating healthy relationships and recognizing/responding to intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, and sexual assault
  • Clinic Services: what's available & how to overcome barriers to access
